Picasso described art:  as 'a form of magic, designed as a mediator between this strange and hostile world and us, a way of seizing the power by giving form to our terrors as well as our desires'

My  initial response to an event is to break it into parts and attempt to make some sense of it by building up layers, wiping them away or covering them up.  I see my paintings  as  fundamentally a search or maybe a conversation, rather than a destination.

For a number of years the work has been predominantly monochrome but  recently has moved to greater use of colour - utilising an opaque and heavily concealing pigment as a device to cover up whatever unknown layers may lie beneath. Some of these pieces have been prompted by a childhood memory of scratching the kitchen cupboards to reveal multi-coloured puddles of history lying underneath.

"Maggie McGregor is  based in Auckland, New Zealand. Her professional development has been largely through part time summer schools and workshops .  Since 2011 she has taken painting classes  with Matthew Browne and continues to have a relationship with Browne School of Art.
